Mahmud related us 'Ad ar-Razzaq related to us Ma'mar informed us on the authority of Az-Zuhri on the authority of Ibn al-Musayyab on the authority of his father When Abu Talib was dying , the Prophet went in unto him and (found) Abu Jahl by hi side, and he said:

Abu Talib

O my uncle Say there is no deity save God, by virtue of these words I could plead for thee before God. thereupon Abu Jahl and Abd Allah ibn Abi Umayyah said O Abu Talib wilt thou forsake the faith of Abd al-Muttalib? And they did not cease to speak such words unto him until he said - and these where his last words- I remain in the faith of Abd al-Muttalib. Thereupon the Prophet said: Indeed, I shall beg of God forgivness for thee as long as I am not forbidden to do so.

Abu Talib

Shortly after the verse was revealed [9:113]

Abu Talib

It is not for the Prophet and the faithful to beg of God forgiveness for the idolaters, even though they be near of kin, after it hath become clear to them that they are inmates of Hell Fire
