- 1st Muharram 14 (28th February 635) - Khalid bin Walid captures plain of Marj al-Suffar, blocking Byzantine reinforcements for Damascus
- 21st November 1979 (1st Muharram 1400) - US embassy in Islamabad is burned down to the ground on rumors that Americans were behind the occupation of Islam's holiest site the previous day.

- Shi'ite Muslims begin the observance of the Commemoration of Muharram which marks the anniversary of the Battle of Karbala. Imam Husayn entered Karbala.
