Muhammad is the final prophet and messenger of Islam. Born and raised in the city of Mecca, Muhammad grew up as a tradesman and was known amongst his people as an honest, trustworthy man. At the age of forty he saw an angel one day while he was in seclusion in a cave, who revealed to him the first verses of the Qur'an, and established his role as a prophet. For the next twenty-three years of his life, Muhammad conveyed the revelations he received from God and spread the message of Islam (submission to God) first to his immediate family, and then to all of mankind.
