[edit] Construction
Years of base-line studies were conducted in order to decide the best site for the construction of the Island, taking into consideration environmental impact of constructure, infrastructure and cost.
The Crecent is built from rock, whist the island is built from sand. The breakwater rises to four meters above chart datum (low tide). 92,234,000 cubic meters of sand were dredged up from the sea bed to form the island, whilst the crecent was constructed with 4,888,000 cubic meters of rock. The sand has undergone extensive compaction to ensure it does not sink.
[edit] Engineering Challenges
In terms of engineering acheivement, the Palm has been a milestone. Although land reclaimation had existed before the creation of the palm, in particular projects in Florida, and Holland and the airports in Hong Kong and Osaka, nothing on this scaled had been undertaken. There were many challengs to overcome such as
- Formation of the Shape using rock and sand. Previous land reclamation used straight lines. DGPS (Differential Global Positioning System) was used to give accuarcy of sand filling to within one centimeter.
- Effective wind and water breakers. Extensive tests were performed by Sogreah Gulf, using a 1,950 meter long scale model, and a 12 meter random wave generator.
- Quality of the sea water. In order to prevent stagnation and ensure the sea water is refreshed every 13 days two 100 meter openings were introduced along the crecent on the suggestion of WL Delft Hydraulics who conducted extensive computer simulation of the project
